In the city of Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, the Tierschutzverein has been providing dog owners with essential first aid knowledge since last year. The courses, taught by animal healer Diana Meintschel and dog trainer Jens Bach, aim to equip pet owners with the necessary skills to provide the best possible help in an emergency.

The curriculum is not limited to theory but also includes hands-on training. Participants learn what they should have on hand in case of an emergency, as well as practical skills such as binding a dog's paw and performing CPR on dog dummies.

Many dog owners in the region have little contact with the topic of dog first aid until an emergency arises, according to Jens Bach. One such dog owner, Daniela Troll, experienced an emergency with her dog, who suddenly collapsed and started convulsing in the street. Troll recalls that having additional first aid knowledge in such a situation was an advantage.

Animal healer Meintschel reports that many participants in first aid courses express particular concern about poisonings in dogs. Common household items like toothpaste, sweets, and orchids can pose hazards to pets. If a dog owner suspects a poisoning, it is recommended to get to the vet as soon as possible.

Thomas Frömmig, another dog owner, has experienced emergencies with his French Bulldog, Buddy. In the past, Buddy once chewed on a wasp, causing his head to swell, which required immediate veterinary attention. Frömmig always carries a first aid kit for Buddy, a practice that is now encouraged by first aid courses offered nationwide by various providers, such as aid organizations, veterinarians, and local dog clubs.

First aid courses for dogs are not a new concept, but the Tierschutz Halle association's course is one of many that are now available to pet owners across Germany. The course aims to fill the gap and prepare dog owners for emergencies, teaching them the skills they need to help their pets in critical situations.
